Social Justice Today

Research Project

Conduct research and write about a current-day social justice issue.

Introduction

In this lesson you have learned about various social justice issues through readings, news articles, and class discussions. You will now take an intensive look at a contemporary social justice issue of your choice. Follow the directions below and begin your research. Your instructor will specify a due date for your research project.

Research Project

Choose a contemporary social justice topic that you have heard or read about recently, research it online to develop a fuller understanding of the issue, and then write about it, addressing the prompts below. Be sure to use reputable sources and to cite your work where necessary.

  1. Describe the topic you have chosen.

    • Provide an overview of the issue itself and a brief history of the issue to date.

    • What is unjust about this situation?

    • Who does it affect?

    • How and why did this issue arise, and what efforts have been made to address it?

    • Why is it important that this issue be addressed?

  2. Describe possible ways to address the issue

    • What are some ways in which this issue might be resolved or made better, at least partially?

    • In your judgment, which of these actions would be the most just? Why?

    • In your judgment, how achievable are these actions? Why?

  3. Compare your social justice topic with the circumstances of the Japanese American incarceration during World War II and the Japanese American redress movement. What is similar and different?
